PIVOT is an experimental, book-length poem exploring the profound act of turning, with the Haitian Revolution as its cornerstone. It moves beyond historical narrative, scrutinising this epochal event through its critical junctures of rupture and radical reorientation. Using minimalist abstractions of language, Mason Jordan delves into the visceral and conceptual mechanics of turning: a turning away from colonial subjugation, and a turning towards new vocabularies of freedom. PIVOT examines international revolt, revolutionary fervour, and relation in the aftermath of transatlantic enslavement and European colonialism.

Imani Mason Jordan is an interdisciplinary writer, editor, artist and curator interested in performance and poetics. A PhD Candidate in the Department of Political Science and International Studies at the University of Birmingham, they study racial capitalism and carceral logics through the work of Stuart Hall. They are the author of PIVOT (Hela Press, 2026) and Objects Who Testify (PSS, 2019) and director of PAPERFLESH PUBLISHING, a small press and editorial studio for new and experimental literature by black writers, specialising in black writing in translation and recovery. Mason Jordan’s experimental performance practice uses improvisation, minimalist technique and black study to choreograph language, foregrounding the speaking/reading voice as a musical instrument. They are also one half of the artist duo repertoire, and curator of the group show Nomenclature for the Time Being, currently on view at Raven Row, London.
Jackie Wang is a poet, scholar, multimedia artist, and Assistant Professor of Literary Arts at Brown University. She is the author of Carceral Capitalism (Semiotext(e), 2018), the poetry collection The Sunflower Cast a Spell to Save Us from the Void (Nightboat Books, 2021; National Book Award Finalist, Lambda Literary Award Finalist), the experimental essay and poetry collection Alien Daughters Walk Into the Sun (Semiotext(e), 2023), and The Collected Graces (forthcoming from Nightboat Books). She is also the co-author, with the Precarity Lab, of Technoprecarious (Goldsmiths Press, 2020). Prior to joining Brown’s faculty, she was an Assistant Professor at The New School and the University of Southern California.
PIVOT è un poema sperimentale in forma di libro che esplora il profondo atto del voltarsi, del cambiare direzione, assumendo come punto di riferimento centrale la Rivoluzione Haitiana. L’opera va oltre la narrazione storica, interrogando questo evento epocale attraverso i suoi momenti cruciali di rottura e radicale riorientamento. Attraverso astrazioni linguistiche minimali, Mason Jordan indaga le dinamiche viscerali e concettuali del voltarsi: un voltarsi lontano dalla soggiogazione coloniale e un voltarsi verso nuovi vocabolari della libertà. PIVOT esamina le rivolte internazionali, il fervore rivoluzionario e le relazioni che emergono all’indomani della schiavitù transatlantica e del colonialismo europeo.

Imani Mason Jordan è artistə, scrittorə, editorə e curatorə interdisciplinarə. La sua ricerca si concentra sulla performance e sulla poetica.
